A Short History of the Acoustic Guitar

The first contemporary acoustic guitars were very similar to classical guitars but strung with steel strings. The advent of new bracing techniques and thicker bodies gave way to the modern acoustic we know today. This allowed for the higher tension and introduced more chordal based music in place of Spanish style classical playing. It also had the effect of picks being more widely introduced into modern playing techniques.

The medieval Lute and Arabic Oud easily had the most impact in shaping what we know as acoustic guitars today. Stringed instruments have a long history and are found in carvings of antiquity that date back some 3000 years.

Around the 15th and 16th centuries, the Lute was falling out of favor and the new Spanish style guitars, with the familiar curved silhouette, began appearing.

In Spain, the vihuela was one of the final predecessors to our modern acoustic. It was played with one hand in front of the hole in the body, and had the hourglass shape we know today.

By the late 1700s, these guitars had been standardized as having six strings and resembling 21st century acoustic guitars.
